movie review : Videsh -heaven on earth.

Cast: Preity Zinta, Vansh Bharadwaj

Director: Deepa Mehta

I
like Preity Zinta. Period. I like her so much that Im almost in love with her. But, Im tellin you, folks, this is review ain't a biased one. Man, Preity
Zinta was awesome in the movie is kinda like the only thingy y'al wonder once the movie is over.

Pz plays Chand, a young Punjabi girl who's parents have fixed her marriage with Rocky, played by Vansh Bhardwaj, who's family resides in Toronto. So,
for her marriage Chand travels to Toronto from India and lives in a small house containing her husband's entire family which includes,a grandfather, a mom, an aunt, brother's, brother's wives & their children. There she is tormented my her mother in-law & is ignored by her husband who talks more with his hands than his mouth whenever she stands up against his ill-treating mother. After several such incidents she even tries to poison Rocky gathering courage as advised by a black-American-woman cum door-mat working with her. (Well this tells us somethin bout American women too; they won't take shit lyin flat on their back, something which i always felt Indian women should also practice)

Rocky's mother like any any age-old-mother shown in Indian cinema thinks that the 'bahu' will take his 'beta' away from her. There's a wonderful
scene where when Rocky & Chand live in a hotel room for a night for you-know-wot, and the mother shows up in the pretext of missing her son too much & sees to it that they don't come close that night.

Sounds like any other bollywood film, ryt? Yeah, it is, xcept for the Zinta babe's performance who portrays the sorrow's and feelings of Chand
brilliantly thru' her eyes only. Vansh brings intensity to Rocky's character and his mother played by Balinder Johal, too, does a fantastic job as a insecure mother. But boy, Videsh is driven by Pz who delivers her career-defining role as she brings so much depth to the character of Chand.

The movie's quite realistic for most of it's part until Mehta decides to use the unrealistic element like a cobra showing up in the backyard which forms
a part of Chand's imagination and takes the human form of her loving-husband Rocky. It looks a bit too much as it gets repetitive.
It's here where,
Videsh looks cold.

The movie is ultimately the story of a woman's struggle for her identity and self-confidence in the face of domestic violence.

Videsh is slow yet alarming. I'd say it's worth a watch for Pz's honest performance. Go ahead, folks.

Sin.

Men and women sin in different ways.

The seven sins:

1. LusT

Excessive thoughts or desires of a sexual nature can lead to sexual addiction, fornication, adultery, bestiality, rape, perversion, and incest.

2. GluttonY

Gluttony is the over-indulgence and over-consumption of anything to the point of waste. In the Christian religions, it is considered a sin because of the excessive desire for food, or its withholding from the needy.

3. GreeD

A sin of excess, Greed (as seen by the church) is applied to the acquisition of wealth in particular.

4. SlotH

Sloth is viewed as being a refusal to enjoy the goodness of God and the world God created. However, the definition of sloth has changed considerably. Now it represents the failure to utilize one's talents and gifts.

5. WratH

Wrath (or anger or "Rage") may be described as inordinate and uncontrolled feelings of hatred and anger.

6. EnvY

Like greed, envy may be characterized by an insatiable desire; they differ, however, for two main reasons. First, greed is largely associated with material goods, whereas envy may apply more generally. Second, those who commit the sin of envy resent that another person has something they perceive themselves as lacking, and wish the other person to be deprived of it.

7. PridE

In almost every list pride (or hubris or "vanity") is considered the original and most serious of the seven deadly sins, and indeed the ultimate source from which the others arise. It is identified as a desire to be more important or attractive than others, failing to give compliments to others though they may be deserving of them, and excessive love of self (especially holding self out of proper position toward God).

The most common sin for women is pride, while for men, the urge for sex.

The most common sin for men to face was lust followed by gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride.

For women the most common sins were pride, envy, anger and sloth.

He: sure

He: bye. gd. sd.

She: byeeeeeee.. sd.

"Then in the morning I called her. She said she wouldn't be able to come. So, I said that I will come to meet her outside her college & so one hour later I was there outside her college. And by this tym she was already in McDonald's waitin for me. As I sat on the chair beside her 'Don't look at me, Im feeling very shy' were her first words. I was surprised to hear this from a girl who is,actually, meeting up with a guy she met online whom she barely even knows. Don't feel shy while talkin to strangers online, I was about to ask but then thought this would screw my chances & so I decided to keep quiet & look less in her direction. The 'date' ended few hours later & then we met up quite regularly. On some days she would come near my office, on other days I would go & wait for

her outsyde her college. Things were pretty good.

One day just like any other we decided to meet again. I just sent her a txt saying 'McDonalds'. This created a big confusion. Now, there's a McDonald's

outsyde my office as well as one near her college, almost insyde her college. We had never been to the McDonald's which was outsyde of my office. So, I went & waited for her in the McDonald's outsyde her college & she decided to use some extra brains & she waited for me in the McDonald's outsyde of my office. She thought it would be convenient. Now, from when did girls start thinking about our convenience, I thought. I waited for an hour insyde finishing 3Burgers & an large coke. I don't noe what she did waiting that long 'cause even she waited for the same amount of tym. For once I felt she was fooling me & must be at home watchin Television & I bet she even felt the same about me. So, after a lot of calls to each other & a lot of confusion we eventually decided not to meet that day. So, that day, we didn't meet.

I got a bit busy on the following 3 days & didn't catch up with her, neither on fone, nor online. After 3 days which felt like 3months I decided to give her a call. I was gettin serious about her. And so, I did. But that day she said she had to meet up with a girl-friend of hers so the plan got cancelled. And like this we didn't meet for 2 weeks 'cause she met her 4 more tyms after this one. Desperation was sinking in.

It was Sunday. 11:00am. My phone rang & it was her at the other end. But, at this end it was me and my mom beside me. I gathered some courage and answered the phone. But didn't manage to speak clearly. I spoke as if it was a guy at the other end & spoke a bit non-sense but somehow I managed to make her understand that I would call her back in sometym. Little did I noe that this 'sometym' would cost me so much.

Lyk I said, I gave her a call at 12 noon. I was in tremendously romantic mood that day so I went to a garden next to my building & the took the seat in the remote corner of the garden. I did all this before I gave her a call.

I called. She answered. But she didn't say what I wanted to hear.

She: Now it's too late. It's 12: ya. By the tym we meet it will be 14:00 & then I have to return home soon.

Me: So what. Go home late one day na. We haven't met for 2weeks, you noe.

She: Ya, I noe but then I was thinkin of meeting another online friend of mine.

Me: Is this a he or a she?

She: A guy.

Me: What the.. We haven't met for 2 weeks & you don't care about that. All you're thinkin about ryt now is meeting that guy.

She: No, I wanted to meet you so I called you at 11:00 but then..

Me: But what?

She: Then he called up & I promised him that I would meet him since you weren't free.

Me: So, it's like this now. If Im not free then someone else?

She: No, you don't understand.

Me: Yeah, I don't want to understand crap like this. 2weeks before this you wanted to meet this girl-friend of yours & now you want to meet this guy instead of me.

She: But..

(Klick!!)

I hung up.

I couldn't take more. It was very clear she avoided me. I was very upset. And once she told me that she felt shy when I looked at her, I thought. The whole ambiance that I had created, that corner seat of the garden, that silence, was all wasted. I went home & straight to bed. I was disappointed.

I made sure that I didn't call her the next day. So, I didn't & even she didn't. This affected me badly as I was damn serious about her.

Like this many weeks passed. We hadn't contacted each other. I didn't noe whether I was heart-broken, angry or was it my ego but all this tym I wondered as to why she never called me.

Then one day, I met her online. We greeted each other & then we had nuthin to say to each other. Neither me, nor her. I asked her bout her college life & she asked

m bout my office stuff. Just that & nuthin more. Like this we did meet a couple of tyms online and this was all that we spoke. This reduced gradually.
And since then I haven't spoken to her. And now she's not there on my list".

'kabhi ladki ke chakkar mein mat padh' was his final sentence as he ended his story.

He sounded heart-broken, definitely.

Now, I do not noe whether it was a warning or an advice. But I'll take it as an advice as advices are usually warnings in disguise.

And what's the harm in taking an advice from someone elder and a brother.

Dostana.

I decided to ryt a blog criticising this film whilst I was in the loo over my daily routine. I guess that's the kinda place where you are struck upon the idea of rytin sumthin about Dostana.

First of all, I can't understand how can anyone act in Karan Johar's movies?

Dostana
starts the trend in Bollywood where actors/actresses will start using their well toned bodies to camouflage their flaws in acting?
To promote a movie you show it's lead actor strippin n showin his butts on the front page? Man do I have to get up in the morning to see this?
It was said he worked on his butts for 6 months to get in shape. So what? To hell with John n his so-called-well-toned butts. If he had spent so much tym tryin to learn how to act it would have done him so much good.
Earlier actors used to go to acting-training skools to fine tune their acting skills, now-a-days, they hit the gym.

Bobby Deol.. he looks jus so silly. He was better off in '
Solider' n for that matter even in 'Bichoo' where he plays a milk-drinking supari killer and a scorpion care-taker.

Abhishek Bachchan, well, he's hit a jackpot already. The most beautiful lady of the country, Aishwarya Rai, as yor wife what else would anyone ask for. No wonder he's not concerned bout his 6-8 packs or for that matter even his butts.

And Priyanka, my dear, why did you have to act in this film that too after doing sumthin like
Fashion. Girl, You were so good in that.

Man, John can't act. Why don't u guys understand that. I wish John's acting skills were as toned as his biceps.

For that matter even Bipasha, Mineesha (y do u thnk she wore a bikini oderwise), SameeraReddy, Katrina Kaif, Celina Jaitley, Amrita Arora, etc can't act as well.

Show cleavage, wear short skirts, get into a bikini; it's all good but at least have some good role to accompany that as well.

Finally, KJo please get married (c'mon man you jus made a movie about it) or jus.. jus get lost.

One Missed Call.

Tring..tring. Tring..tring [No answer]

You have one missed call!

Should’ve missed the call -- is the feeling that all avid movie watchers, like me, went to watch Hello felt after coming out of the hall. Salman says ’A call you have to answer’. Really? Who cares what Salman says.

If you ask me, honestly, I like Chetan Bhagat’s novels, somewhat, and when I heard there was a movie made based on it, I wanted to watch it. Little did I know that it would be preposterous. This one time — just this one time — I wish I had been busy attending to something more important so that I could not find time to go for the movie.

Now, I have a condition before I read any of Bhagat's novels which is that no matter what no one will ever try to make a movie out of his novels. Because I feel it's Bhagat's mistake too. He shouldn't have let Atul Agnihotri direct the movie in such a way.

Hello is an embarrassingly amateurish movie. The film is based on Chetan Bhagat’s best selling novel titled ‘One night @ the call centre’. The film revolves around six persons and how their life changes that particular night. I wish they had casted serious characters in the film to show such a serious plot. The movie includes Sharman Joshi as a call-centre team-leader in the making, and Sohail Khan, Eesha Koppikar, Gul Panag, Amrita Arora and Sharat Saxena. Starting with the call-centre in Hello, which looks more like the lobby of a three-star hotel, to its executives who always seem to be on a break or using official lines to make personal calls, the filmmakers seem unaware of and indifferent towards even basic details about the world they've set their story in. Call centre employees everywhere will be horrified by the way their job is being portrayed.

The characters in this film are dull and uninspired, and the actors playing these characters are just as bored.

Sharman Joshi and Sohail Khan lend a few moments of silly humor, but the others appear to be sleepwalking through their scenes. Eesha Koppikar is shown as a struggling model but the kind of attire she wears suggests something else which was even mentioned in the film where she’s known to have slept with many men to get good work. Gul Panag managed to act well in some parts of the movie. Amrita Arora is better off on Page 3 where she keeps popping up in every other party with a new boyfriend. Why can’t she just wear backless tops, advertise something’s, give stupid interviews about fashion and make a living out of it, why does she have to take up acting?

To add to it the other characters in the film like the call-centre-head and the system maitainence guy are exaggerated to such a degree that they come off looking like idiots. The call-centre-head seems to love Americans and he keeps saying that throughout the film then why does he have to wear a tie of the flag of the States? That’s exaggeration.

Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif who chipped in between could not do a thing to make Hello less boring.

When you occasionally find yourself laughing in your seat, you realize you're laughing AT the film, not WITH it.

Moral of the story: Hello’s dull. Hello’s extremely stupid.

The only thing right about the movie was the beautiful Katrina Kaif playing an angel, because she did look like one.
